Who ESTPs Are Most Compatible With
ESTP’s personality compatibility is based on the cognitive alignment of the types, their temperament, and their interaction style. ESTPs are as follows:
- Cognitive functions: Se Ti Fe Ni
- Temperament (Kiersey): Artisans
- Interaction style (Linda Berens): In Charge
There is no perfect 100% compatible match. ESTPs are scored for their compatibility with other personality types based on four factors- communication, passion, friendship, and partnership. A match that is high in one is often lower in another. It is up to the individual to decide which factors are most important for them in a relationship.
Communication
ESTPs have the greatest compatibility in communication with types that share the same cognitive functions. The cognitive functions are like languages our minds speak and when someone has the same functions, we do not have to translate our minds to them. ESTPs speak the languages of logic and reality. As a result, ESTPs communication compatibility can be broken down as follows:
- High Compatibility: ISTP, ESTP, ENFJ, INFJ
- Medium High Compatibility: INTP, ENTP, ESFP, ISFP
- Medium Low Compatibility: INTJ, ENTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ
- Low Compatibility: INFP, ENFP, ESTJ, ISTJ
Partnership
For partnership, ESTPs are most compatible with IJ types- meaning INTJ, INFJ, ISTJ, and ISFJ. Together, they are the most efficient and get the most done. The IJ balances them out and helps them to execute effectively on their ideas. Further, their working styles do not clash with each other, preventing conflict and complacency.
Friendship
For friendship, ESTPs tend to be compatible with fellow SP types. This means they have the greatest compatibility for companionship with ISTPs, ESTPs, ESFPs, and ISFPs. These types see the world through a similar lens and so can easily get along and enjoy activities together.
Passion
ESTPs have the greatest amount of passion compatibility in a relationship with those that have opposite cognitive functions to them. For them, ESTJs, ISTJs, ENFPs, and INFPs are polar opposites to them and create a spark. However, this passion can also turn to the most electric fights. These types together are the most likely to resolve their arguments with “physical activities.”
Who ESTPs are least compatible with
ESTPs have the greatest amount of conflict, and thus least compatibility, with the personality types that have opposite cognitive functions. When two people with opposite perspectives come together, they are bound to conflict eventually. While all couples have arguments no matter what their types, below are some common points of conflict for ESTPs with other personality types.
Incompatibility with SJ types- ESTJ, ISTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ
- ESTPs seek to engage with what is actionable in the present in order to move towards singular Ni vision. Thus, they disrupt the status quo, distressing the SJ and making them feel like things are in chaos. SJs follow a clear set of steps based on what has been done in the past. This makes the ESTP feel stifled and trapped. The ESTP doesn’t understand why the SJ doesn’t want to move forward or “go for it”. The SJ views the ESTP’s approach to the world as haphazard and dangerous.
Incompatibility with NP types- ENTP, INTP, ENFP, INFP
- NPs prefer to focus on many possibilities that the ESTP views as not practically actionable in the present. So, the ESTP shoots down the NP’s ideas as they are not able to be done. This makes the NP feel devalued. To the ESTP, the NP seems to not know how to do what needs to be done. They view them as lacking follow through. To the NP, the ESTP seems narrow minded and unimaginative.
Incompatibility with FP types- ENFP, INFP, ESFP, ISFP
The FP’s values do not make sense to the ESTP because they are based in an intuitive feeling and liking of a thing rather than underlying reasons. The ESTP’s logic annoys the FP. They don’t care about the reasons behind an action, just that they did it. The FP makes the ESTP feel like they’re a bad or cold person for putting logic above feeling. The ESTP makes the FP feel like their feelings are invalid in the face of logic.
Incompatibility with TJ types- ENTJ, INTJ, ESTJ, ISTJ
The TJ is focused on efficiency and gets frustrated with the ESTP’s need for understanding which can slow things down. ESTPs can lack respect for TJ’s lack of depth of understanding a subject. The ESTP sees that the TJ can say a bunch of facts but does not have a true understanding of the subject at its core. When a TJ teaches or tries to explain a concept to an ESTP, the ESTP is prone to ask many questions to develop their own internal framework of the subject. The TJ sometimes interpret these questions as being dumb or lacking research.
